European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other legal news:

  • A federal judge has halted efforts to cut security grants to states which resist specific federal immigration rules. The official stated the action was “another example” of linking federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city ahead of the new year, coinciding with an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to accept dozens of individuals from the US in return for additional aid, following signing a formal agreement with Washington.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action seeking the removal of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a broader belief in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy strategies.
