A recent study suggests that individuals who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a major medical journal points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users using these treatments need to be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with other pills.
The team note that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically see a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Experts believe the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Accounts
People who have stopped the jabs report a powerful return of appetite.
"I experienced something flipping and you're instantly starving," described one woman.
This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Use is more common among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success likely depends on combined behavioural changes.
