Trump's Woke Warning Misses Europe's Real Threat: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy presents a flawed view of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" agendas represent an existential threat to European civilization. Yet, this argument is based on a serious misinterpretation of the situation. The true danger facing Europe is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Gap Between the US and Europe

The data reveal a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, compared to a paltry 13.5% increase for the European Union. During this time, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Today, about 50% of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are American, while only four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Question

This widening economic gap stems from stronger productivity growth in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in Europe.

This disparity raises a vital issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does the EU positioned? Most analysts agree it is essentially a two-horse race between the US and China, with European nations starting at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

Several major factors explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a true unified investment market, a factor that caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hinder European business. A US startup can introduce a product under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is divided among 27 separate regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, one can find causes for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have started to advance serious reform. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for major changes.

Given appropriate incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses considerable advantages: skilled workforce, top-tier education systems, and premier labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still dramatically increase productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a critical moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's technological decline has been gradual. But, if it fails to take decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
